Ninety-three days and counting until IMTS

Those of us preparing to exhibit at IMTS 2012 look at the number of days left until the show and then at our to-do list and start to sweat a little – so much to do, so little time.

IMTS 2012 To Do ListHow about you? Have you started making plans to attend? If not, it’s probably time you got started. I attended a regional AMT meeting in the Chicago area Wednesday and learned that rooms at the officially sanctioned show hotels have already sold out.  Show organizers are scrambling to find more rooms. Two years ago I had to book rooms in Janesville, Wisconsin for some procrastinators in my company. At that time, all of the hotels from the suburbs to past Rockford, Illinois were full. The drive in the morning wouldn’t be too bad from there, probably around two and half hours. The drive back out at rush hour would be ugly. Trust me; I drive the middle section of that trip every day.

Sold out hotels are indications that IMTS 2012 is going to be a good show.  Apparently, exhibitors are feeling optimistic as well. Floor space is not only sold out, exhibitors have paid the final invoices. I was told that hadn’t happened in quite a while. During the last several shows exhibitors delayed final payments as long as they could.

AMT’s updated show website can help you organize your plans. There are links for registration, hotels and parking. “My planner” will help you locate exhibitors on the floor plan and add them to a follow-up list so you can maximize your time at the show. Many listings with in the exhibitor guide contain information regarding machine tools and tools that will be featured in the booths. Watch a machine video or glance through product news as you make your must see list.

Star SU has two booths this year – one in the gear pavilion in the north hall and another in the west hall among cutting tool manufacturers.

This information is great. I hope to find more useful blog posts here that will expand my knowledge. It would hard to imagine many of our high tech machines and tools function the way they do, without gears. Gears are manufactured using a wide variety of tools, techniques, machines and scientific tools to achieve perfection in their making. One such process used to manufacture gears is called broaching. Involute spline hobs are one such tool used in the broaching process.
