Gear Expo Wrap Up: Gear Manufacturers Experiencing Industry Rebound
It’s been a week since I left Cincinnati and the dust is starting to settle. Gear Expo was a good show for Star SU, so our office has been very busy. Show attendees were not only planning for purchases next year, they were buying stock machines and pushing for better deliveries on customized machines and tools.

Some negotiations went on for days. |
Gear Manufacturers are busy – busier than they’ve been in while. Inside the hall exhibitors and attendees alike wondered aloud if they were lucky or if the national media had the economic picture all wrong. A short stroll down the often empty streets of downtown Cincinnati past the homeless panhandlers provided a sharp reminder of the harshness of the last down turn. Not all of the panhandlers were hopeless drunks. I counted myself lucky more than once. If it weren’t for the bailout of GM and Chrysler, I’d probably be living in my parents’ basement with my adult daughter. That’s a sobering thought for a middle class, college educated professional at age 50.
If your plant was too busy for you to attend the show, you can learn more about the Bourn & Koch horizontal hobbing machine that we sold at the show by clicking the photo below. There you can request a quote for a 400 mm hobber designed for your specific application.
We’ve also posted a presentation explaining how advanced coatings can save your operation money on tooling costs. BALINITE® ALCRONA PRO, the second generation of ALCr-based coatings, is now available on new and re-sharpened tools from Star SU. Access the presentation here.
Following the show Gear Technology magazine electronically published a copy of the Gear Expo show guide (PDF), containing product releases and ads for exhibiting companies. GT also published a collection of interviews conducted with Gear Expo exhibitors and attendees.
