It’s been a week since I left Cincinnati and the dust is starting to settle. Gear Expo was a good show for Star SU, so our office has been very busy.  Show attendees were not only planning for purchases next year, they were buying stock machines and pushing for better deliveries on customized machines and tools.

The Bourn & Koch 400H CNC horizontal hobbing machine is a 7-axis CNC machine that can hob spur gears, helical gears, splines and threads on cylindrical blanks or shafts. Its powerful, direct drive work spindle and extremely stable, steel-polymer composite components make it ideal for manufacturing large and heavy shaft parts up to 406 mm in diameter and 6.4 module. Shaft lengths up to 76” can be processed by the extended bed version on display at AGMA’s Gear Expo.

BALINITE^® ALCRONA PRO, the second generation of ALCr-based coatings, is now available on new and re-sharpened tools from Star SU. Developed by Oerlikon Balzers, ALCRONA PRO can be used in a wider range of applications than other aluminum-based coatings because it provides better heat resistance for high temperatures and better wear resistance for tough cutting applications.

When I was a kid I spent my summers traveling the U.S., visiting national parks, museums and historic places. There were times, I admit, that I would have preferred to have been home playing with the neighbor kids; but, looking back now I’m glad my parents took the time to take my younger brother and me on these extended field trips. I was exposed to new ideas, met new people and received a broader perspective of history and world events. Frankly, it gave me an edge.
